I just received an email from the Courtyard at DuPont Circle in the DC Area. If I host a meeting at their hotel I will receive 20K Points and Platinum Status. Marriott must really be hurting or they really don't appreciate us Road Warriors. I could easily go in rent out the meeting room for a day at $250.00 and receive Platinum Status.

Do they not require a certain number of rooms booked for the meeting?

I'm willing to bet there is a minimum to get that particular benefit, though the idea of using meetings rather than room nights to "run" for status is not at all unheard of.

might be good to confirm the terms and conditions.

SPG for example also has Meeting Planner programme, and to earn points and status, there is a minimum requirement for rooms and meeting rooms booked;)

so i reckon the carrot being dangled comes at a reasonably high requirement

Yup, you need to book room nights. Weekday must be 15 rooms, min 3 nights per room and include a Sun and Thurs (How does that work in three nights?). Weekend is 15 rooms, min 2 nights. Details here.

There's a whole portion of the site dedicated to promos for meetings. I'd never seen it before, since I'm not a meeting planner, but I'm considering a career change. :)

Ok. No way this can ever be considered unless this is your day job. As an individual, mattress run will be cheaper.

Can a wedding be considered though?

can't be a day job on itself, but if part of the job role is to book meeting and conferences for the company, this may work...

for an individual, mattress runs to get Platinum such in this case would need a very huge number of mattreses ;)
