The treatment and food that Mr. Puck receives when visiting any of these restaurants, in addition to the price he likely (does not) pays is most likely a wholly different experience than any of us would receive.

"He tells John O' Ceallaigh what he looks for in a restaurant"
Let me guess... is he looking for the stuff that he's hawking in the Wolfgang Puck Express "restaurants"?

I was at Spago during dineLA last year. Pretty good, though I do wish I ordered something besides the NY Steak. Bright side ... I got to meet him :)

His choices are not too bad. Wolfgang has done a good job of making food that people will eat. Nothing too crazy, but not really what I look for in a destination restaurant.

Puck is nothing more than a watered down brand to me..... sorry to be so harsh, but this guy has put his name on "food" that can hardly be called that....

No chance in hell this guy is getting any of my high end food budget....

This obvious truth is hardly harsh.

Now, does he get any of your rear end food budget? :D

Le Gavroche the only one on that list I've been to. Also about 4yrs ago. Didn't rank in the upper echelon of restaurants I've been to, to be honest, yet folks have raved about it for years.

I really didn't find anything particularly special about it.

I'm surprised that Noma isn't on the list. Fat Duck was a huge disappointment when I went earlier this year.

I went to Sushi Seki (in Manhattan) earlier this year, and Emeril Lagasse stepped in right after us. My friend and I were waiting for a table, and the maitre'd curtly said that we couldn't pass because 'Emeril Lagasse' is dining {here}. Only once he got to his table did another lackey seat us. So much for getting a good slice of raw sea creature that night...

I have been fortunate enough to eat in some of the finer restaurants around the world.. but nothing still beats a quiet home cooked dinner at home with a nice bottle of wine from the wine cellar.

I have been in four of his six, he includes Matsuhisa surreptitiously. Matsuhisa was wonderful but like all the others on his list taht i have visited it has seen better days. The very commercial Mr Puck never really seems to care too much about food, but favors celebrity events and heavy Austrian style stuff. Once Le Louis XV was worth a trip from Saint-Paul, where i resided, to Monte Carlo. Mr Puck's condescending comments about Provencal cuisine show that he's quite clueless about that. He's a LA celebrity with all that entails, nothing more or less. I have been to a few of his places, but have avoided them for some time.

I just can't take Trip Advisor recs for food, I looked at my home town's list (Chicago) and in no way should quite a number of those places be on a top restaurant list (except for dining sheep who tend to go to places like Gibson's, Morton's, etc etc:rolleyes:). I can only imagine it is that way with TA elsewhere.
safe to say Puck gets none of my budget, let alone high end.

According to his list, I guessed we missed out by not dining at the Hotel de Paris when staying there. Mrs Sweet Willie & I had too much fun having our own in room meal of some yummies (seafood, cheese, pate, etc) & wine/champagne we had purchased from a nearby market. I thought for sure we would be questioned walking into the hotel with our plastic grocery bags. Ahhh, such class.:D

Many times I have driven from our house near Nice to spend a weekend at The Cavalieri just to dine at La Pergola. The idea that my favorite Rome restaurant is in a hotel, much less a Hilton, boggles the mind. Year after year this is an outstanding place and "worth a trip" as Michelin would have it.

Yes, I totally agree. The first time I only went b/c great reviews on chowhound (actually had made 2 reservations over my stay planning to cancel one, then instead BEGGED for a third :) )
I even took a quick trip to Rome last summer mostly so I could eat there again! SO worth it.
