"The variety of metrics is what led research group the Air Transport Rating Agency to devise its own "holistic" ranking that takes into account 15 criteria that consider direct and indirect factors affecting airline safey. It did so for the world's 100 most important airlines from 2009 and found comprehensive data for 44 of them."

Did they do this based on data pre-AF447?

Maybe they have looked at the historical overall picture?

The same here, I would say they looked at all the historical data on airlines in the list and taken this all together to make the ranking seen here!

Sorry, I can't take this study seriously! They minimize actual accidents by including criteria like revenue and # of employees!

On FT, it was discussed that safe airlines like Qantas and Air Canada were left off this list while Air France was on it, despite 3 major accidents since 2000, including the 2009 A330 accident.

Seems like this is more of a list of biggest airlines than anything (which the 'holistic' criteria would favor!)

And AF had that runway incident in YYZ. Speaking of that another UA Express ran off the runway at YOW again!

No actual ranking is given for top 10 safest airlines by ATRA. Their website specifically says this is in alphabetical order.

Looks like they listed the 10 safest, but didn't rank them and the writer might have added the numbers.

Anyway, I surprised that Air France is in the top ten (one would think that "Number of accidents during the past 10 years" would have a significant weight).

Seriously AF and US Air made this list? Not sure I trust this. What about Singapore Airlines i would assume they should be somewhere in top 10. What about Jet Blue?.

++ to the concerns over AF being #1...

My sister sat next to a MX guy who worked LGW ops last year on the DL flight to ATL...the one airline he said he refused to fly was AF because of what he'd seen WRT to MX...

I've had no issue with any AF flight...but you never know...
