No employee interaction? What happens when something goes wrong or the technology goes awry?

The idea of self-service technology sounds great. Last week I boarded a LH flight with the automated gate and it worked perfectly.

The problem is when something goes wrong is there a person standing by to help? I have had automated check-in machines be difficult and when I asked for help they say try again or you are doing it wrong. Ouch

Technology first is great – but when it fails, a human should be there with a smile.

That's the weak spot I'm most worried about. Will there be someone to help when technology goes awry?

After many of the cuts airlines have made over the past few years I would say we already have the self service airport.
In some cases employees have been so scarce that when one did appear it was on par with an Elvis sighting!

One airport automated system that I really like is Global Entry. Ive never run into a problem with the software, it works very nicely and without any annoyances. I can not say the same for kiosk check-in.
