So I did a google search for milepoint, and came up with this dated Aug-1-2001

    http://www.allbusiness.com/technology/technology-services/809075-1.html

"MilePoint.com is offering frequent flyers the ability to convert their miles and points into online currency called MilePoint Money. The site is a venture of Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines, US Airways, America West, TWA and Hilton HHonors Worldwide"

So how many "MilePoint Dollars" did Randy have to spend to wrangle the domain away from them :)

He knows secrets about their CEO's. They gave it to him to keep him silent.

    OK, history.
Actually that project was started by a good friend of mine, Mark Lacek and I was one of the co-founders. We had initial success and among my claim to fame's with that venture was that we were thinking about people to add to the Board of Directors. I happened to mention that i knew Bob Crandall, the retired former CEO of American Airlines and somewhat father of frequent flyer programs. They all said .... "you do"? So I called Bob on his boat (he was somewhere in the Caribbean then) and chatted him up and asked if he would come on board. His comment was something like "Randy, you've always done positive things around this industry and I'll take your word for it—count me in". So, this little idea had a Chairman of the Board in Bob Crandall. We were doing pretty good developing many relationships and I realized that we were constantly competing with Points.com at that time. Anyway, I was friends of their President, gave a call, got the two groups together and Points.com ended up buying out the original MilePoint, eliminating competition and the URL name has sit idle since then.

Fast forward: about a year and a half ago i started work on an idea for a credit card recommendation engine for all the frequent flyer cards around the globe. Not feeling very creative, I bought the creditcardanswers.com URL and that became an in-house project. When in my model building I wanted to add other financial miles things to the idea, i realized it had outgrown the credit card association. This time i was creative, i called my friends at Points.com and asked about acquiring the MilePoint URL which they were not using. In short, they just gave it to me for free. Anyway, when the idea of building another travel community emerged recently, I decided the credit card/financial idea would have to wait and thus 'MilePoint | where frequent flyers meet' was born. You know, you were all this close |...| from coming here to find out how many miles you would have earned for a quote from Sentry Insurance.

And yes, Bob Crandall and i still stay in touch. And who knows, if I felt I really needed a senior executive to help out here, Bob remains just a phone call away.

Now you know the rest of the story.

(P.S. If the .com crash hadn't happened we likely would have been able to take it public with Bob Crandall at the helm on Wall Street and I would be posting this from my yacht in the Mediterranean—but that's the way it goes!)
