The Official Fall China DO Date has been decided, please confirm your attendance by responding to the thread.

11-14 November 2011 (Veteran's Day Weekend in the U.S, Remembrance Day Weekend in Canada). Plus, 11/11/11 isn't a date that comes around too often...

The more attendants we have, the more bargaining power we have when negotiating for hotel/air discount.

The chance to see Shanghai (AKA Paris of the East) with your fellow FlyerTalkers/FlyerTeas!

We have been trying to setup a China DO in Shanghai in fall of 2011. We have been chatting with folks on our Chinese FT equivalent ‘FlyerTea’ and have picked a date and schedule that would help cross cultural lines and facilitate our common bonds - the thirst for miles/points and status at the lowest price.

One problem as always was to pick a date that hovers around a US/CAN holiday period that would increase the attendance of the folks from North America. Based on general consensus, 11-14 November 2011 has been chosen. If you are a poor working slob, you may have to take a couple of days off of the job but we are going to try and make it worth your while. How else are you going to get the opportunity to get an overview of one of China's largest cities with a group of folks that have a common interest.

    Sample agenda:
    • Friday - Some sort of overview tour of Shanghai during the day for the foreigners and maybe meet up with some of our FlyerTea friends. That night a social hour (or so)and a family style dinner at a place to be chosen. (and yes we will try to adapt to various dietary restrictions and peculiarities)
    • Saturday - Once again a tour option but this one tailored to entertain the interest of our FlyerTea friends and the FlyerTalk types. That night once again a social hour (or two) and a family style dinner at a place to be chose later.
    • Sunday - Kind of open but if enough folks were interested we could setup something from a tour or just a get together for Dim Sum or the likes. The real issue here is are folks going to want to fly home on Sunday or Monday. Let's stay flexible

    - People can come in earlier or leave later (such as I will be doing). If we ended up using group rate, hopefully the rate will be honored as well
    - Optional 1-2 days trip to other cities using the fast train. We’ll see how many people will want to do that and what city.
    - Staying together at 1 host hotel is recommended but not mandatory for easier logistics and we can socialize. We will see if we can get some sort of concession from the big names after we see what hotel alliances folks are dedicated to. Right now the Hilton Chain is looking popular.

Now for the big question - ARE YOU INTERESTED ? Also which hotel chain is your preference?

Please post your thoughts and let's get this firmed up, and do check back often for updates as things develop.

    Example of response:
    Attendance: Definite/Interested
    # of attendees:
    Hotel Preference:
    Other Suggested activities:

There is a similar thread on Flyertalk.com - right now we have 12 positives and approximately interested. This does not include the local FLYERTEA folks that will participate.

I am interested however it is still a long time in the future to be discussing
If we were to attend, it will be Mrs. Taiwaned and myself.
We would prefer Starwood over other chains.
Since we live fairly close by, we may just pick and choose depending on schedule and events planned. We have done every major tourist activity many times over.
