There is a wonderful website of the most beautiful villages (Borghi) in Italy. Well worth using this site as a resource when planning a visit. Don't just go to the standard tourist spots of Rome, Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terra. Spend a relaxing day or so in a magical little village, eat at a local trattoria, sit in a cafe on the town square and enjoy a cafe and pastry.

For each town they have pictures, a brief history (and the story behind the towns name), what to see, what are the local products and specialties; in many cases they also list events, accommodations, shopping info, etc.

Thanks for sharing, Gargoyle! Let's face it, there's so much to see in Italy (I've often thought that a year spent just in Venice wouldn't be long enough to see everything worth seeing), that it's important not to leave out the little-visited sites for those hidden gems!
