Yes, my friends. All true. Seems like a long long time ago.

If I really need to (ie: older relative flying in who I like to help as much as possible), I'll buy a refundable ticket and go to the gate.

I typically enjoy a pre-arrival cocktail at the lounge, too. :)

(For more able-bodied relatives, we send a car.)

Thanks for posting, it brought back this memory. :)

I will include myself in the group of people who would go every time to the airport to greet a loved one at the gate, my dad. I still remember the excitement of going to the airport and being able to see the plane that was bringing him home from his business trip arrive at the gate. Minutes later, he would emerge through the boarding doors and a big smile would acknowledge our presence the minute he picked us from the crowd. Then the best part of the trip to the airport would happen, when the wide open arms, airplane wing style welcome hug would ensue. And right after running towards him to welcome and greet him, I would simply ask how his trip go and how many other big planes did he get to see in his journey. Yes, the Golden Days of Air Travel!
