With hundreds of thousands of choices any choice is arbitrary. That said, I have no objections to any of these.
My personal favorites among those not listed here are:
Fernando de Naronha http://www.noronha.pe.gov.br a few hundred miles off Northeastern Brazil mainland is this remote archipelago. It is idyllic.

The Galapagos http://www.discovergalapagos.com anybody with an interest in biology should make a pilgrimage here, even though Lonesome George is dead.

If we all try, this could end out being one of the longest and most entertaining threads on MP. I'm thinking of Baffin, Santorini, Kish and the list goes on... with some for every taste and budget. Thanks for starting this, General!

From first hand experience, I'll second that recommendation for the Galapagos. If I had to choose one, perhaps Isabela.

Also, if you scuba dive, Costa Rica's Isla del Coco.

St Barts and Jost Van Dyke back in the early '80s...

    Manhattan

A few of Belize's outer cayes

    The whole Los Roques Archipelago...

Another question to be answered: Which islands are a tourist trap, overhyped, or just a mediocre experience?

    Tourist traps IMO:
    New Providence (AKA: Nassau, Bahamas)
    the entire Florida Keys
    US Virgin Islands
    Oahu
    Maui
    Sentosa
and the list could go on for some time.

    More excellent choices IMO:

Great Exuma and other Exuma islands: great diving, snorkeling and beaches. Lousy facilities and services. (note: I owned an island in the Brigantines just north of Great Exuma for more than a decade.)
Kish: a trifle odd, but Iranian resorts are uncommon. No visa required.
Santorini: It may be the most beautiful island I have ever seen. Everyone says so, and everyone is correct. It does get crowded, so out of season works well.
ABC: Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao remain among my favorites

I sailed the Exumas (and much of the Bahamas) on a liveaboard in 1980-81. Raced in the family island regatta. Dived for conch and lobster everyday. Worked for a wooden boat builder who named an entire line of shallow draft, large centerboard schooners the Exuma line. Those were the days...

Diving in the Exumas then was wonderful. Nobody much there, a large, pristine barrier reef just off Georgetown harbor. Lots of conch, grouper, lobster available. I used to walk out my front door wander to the beach and pick up lobster for dinner. Great small squid thrived right beside my dock. Probably it is not too much like taht now. I don't know. I sold my place ten years ago, just before the bottom fell out of the market there.

Phuket and other Thai islands are definitely some of the best in the world and have been listed as such by other magazines. They Thai islands also have some great properties, entertainment, and facilities.

The diving all along the Exumas was incredible. I think Two Turtles Inn was one of the few bars on the island.

Staniel Caye was great back then. We got chased away from Norman's Caye, didn't really know what was happening back then. Very naive.

I remember we were on Great Exuma the day Bob Marley died. The whole place was in mourning.

Crazy scene in Turks and Caico's back then too. Cuban's building an airstrip. Coke everywhere... so we sailed south to Baby Doc's Haiti...

Personally I quite like Guam and Okinawa as far as warm islands go.

I vote for New Zealand, Maldives, Fiji and French Polynesia in general. All have a wide range of accommodations and activities for all.
