Sbarro. Starbucks. Cheeburger Cheeburger. These are the words we now associate with airport dining, if "dining" is even the word you can use for a $5 slice of reheated pepperoni pizza.

It wasn't always like this, of course; proof comes from this 1941 menu from New York-LaGuardia's Coffee Shop which, amongst yumminess like roast chicken with currant jelly and pear tarte bourdaloue (whatever that is), features a $1 steak dinner. For $1.25 you could even add an appetizer, salad and dessert.

It's sad how deeply our paper money has been devalued since then. The old silver dollars though are still worth about the same as a steak ($30).

    $1 in 1941 = $16.01 in 2012.

Still, $16 for a steak dinner at the airport today? Considering my options, I think I would absolutely take my chances with the steak!

haha, not really sure that steaks have "appreciated" 16x without a proper currency adjustment to go along with that.

How in the world do scallops cost less than a 'turkey and mushroom patty', whatever that is?
