I am used to seeing people bringing home souvenirs, but while checking-in for a Jet Airways from flight Bangko to Kolkata, I was amazed at how many flat panel TV’s were being checked.

People tell me there was a recent change to customs policy that allows them to carry a TV without duty. They say the savings is around 30%.

A nice savings, but what you have a warranty issue?

And since most contracts of carriage specifically state that electronics are not the responsibility of the airline, there is no insurance or recourse if they are damaged in transit.

At the end of the day, there are still quite a few arbitrage opportunities out there for those who pay attention to them.
