Just got this email from United...is it just a freaky coincidence that I was searching for tickets to SJD and MSY last week or are they keeping track?

They are keeping track. Internet marketers call it "remarketing." They see what you shop for but don't buy and then advertise it to you later so that if you were indecisive maybe you'll buy it.

I see ANZ and Qantas adds often after I price out trips to AKL, doesn't really surprise me at all. They may have tracking cookies matching you to what ever it is you are.

Williams-Sonoma does this A LOT. If I look at anything on their site, I get an email the next day for that exact item. However, I got the same email you did, so I don't think this particular case is an example of targeted ads. It's just a coincidence.

I've got emails before like if I've left something in a shopping cart, but nothing as crazy as this. Was your email for Cabo and New Orleans also?

I definitely remember New Orleans, but I don't remember if Cabo was in there. Probably.

A minor point here, but I'd just like to point out that the thread title - "Targeted or Creepy?" - is a false dichotomy :D

I find that anything can be creepy if you use the right intonation. I especially like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

He KNOWS if you've been bad or good. Bwa hahahaha!

I'll have pop or little banner ads for products I bought on amazon a day or 2 earlier on the side of website pages that are unrelated. I wonder if the cloud computing concept is making it easy to melt everything together. For example, Milepoint being down for hours because the amazon cloud had a glitch. We're becoming to dependent on things we dont have full control of!!! Bring in the robot overlords....

If you ever searched for the fare, or maybe just visited a website that made reference to travel to the cities may have prompted the email. Big brother just moved into the spare bedroom upstairs, and set up cameras everywhere.

It may be just a generic email promotion. I got the same exact email from United and I never searched for New Orleans or Cabo. In my case, it wasn't tailored to anything I've searched recently.

Jeff has publicly stated that the airline presently does not do enough data mining, and that he intends make customer intelligence gathering a focal point as the merger progresses...

You know, I wouldn't mind a little tracking if it means I get a 10% offer for a trip I already want to make.

On the flip side, UA could charge more once they know I'm interested, though I don't know if it would be illegal. There is a lot of information out there that can be used for or against the consumer, even without exactly tracking your movements online. I read reports a few months ago that one car insurer was providing different online quotes based on the browser used. For example, IE was associated with lower income, less-educated individuals presenting a greater risk, whereas Chrome users were the opposite and presented lower risk. At least that was the assumption. I think that pilot program died pretty quickly.

I got the same email - and I wasn't looking at going to those destinations. So I'd say this isn't targeted, but in your case, slightly creepy.

Was looking online for Adidas sneakers and driving shoes today. Lo and behold now when I go to a website (specifically foxnews.com, yahoofinance.com and a few others), the pages are littered with banner ads for adidas shoes. At least its not for increasing perfomance in the bedroom. Good thing I didnt go to cialis.com. CRAP....now that I mentioned that site in this forum, no doubt I'll be invited to sign up for the automatically delivery club.

I'll have an answer to your question once the private investigator I have following you gives me his report.

(Yes, I am kidding....I'll have the answer before the report)
