    Ready?

I went to visit my mother and collected her mail. Among the bills and cards was a letter from American Express offering her a Platinum AMEX Card and a bonus of 100,000 MR points after spending $3,000 in the first three months.

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? Except for a few things.

My mother is 99 years old! She ran out of all of her money over 6 years ago. She lives in a wonderful Assisted Living center and has neither used a credit card nor a checking account in about 10 years.

Seems like a likely candidate to me!

She still has a credit report I would assume, even if the usage is old. Probably pn other mailing lists. Not really surprising.

Now Gary too? I feel like the kid in Animal House with the drunk girl in bed. And I'm beginning to hear John Belushi on my left shoulder!

I wish I could say I was surprised by the CC company!

However, I'm kinda in agreement that there is no reason their lousy marketing could be your gain.

Yeah, well she's a better candidate than my mom. She died around 15 years ago and Amex is still trying to get her to open a card with them. The amazing thing is that Amex somehow associated my Mom with us and has followed us through several moves.

She should apply. Worst case, they turn her down and she has a pull on her credit file. ;)

Wish they'd send me that offer. I must be on some "do not spam" list with Amex.

Coincidence? Or something off with their targeting process?

I guess that's part of my concern, Daraius. Maybe the third option is that credit is loosening and they are beginning to make some of the same mistakes that got us into this mess in the first place! If they can offer a Platinum to my mother.......

AMEX was the first big CC company to go after all the questionable accounts back in 2006/7, I don't think there is anything systematic going on. Besides, your mom probably has an extremely long credit history and for many years now, untainted with even a CC balance, right? Without them knowing the details of why, sounds like a reasonable target.

They certainly are looking at earning more revenue. Just witness their aggressive entry into pre-paid cards with Bluebird.

And many of the incentives which got us into the credit mess still haven't been fixed, and human nature (greed, envy etc.) might never get fixed, so there are going to be more messes in the future!

if we're headed down the rabbit hole, we might as well go sitting in a first class seat paid with sign-up bonus miles.....That only makes sense :)

Is BlueBird really their "entry" into prepaids though? I think they have had prepaids for as long as Visa and MasterCard have.

if she gets the card and runs up the charges, she probably won't have to pay. Sounds like free money and miles.

My uncle got a letter last week with an offer of 100K MR points too if he signed up for the AMEX Biz Plat. and spends $5K in 3 months.

Plat is a charge card rather than a credit card, not so?

Platinum IS a charge card - but once they give the credit, that only means it affects if ALL the money is due or only some of it (with interest, of course). But credit is credit and most Platinum cards come with a significant line.

I should have said their entry into pseudo-banking which is what they're attempting to do with Bluebird. You're right that they have had pre-paid cards for a long time.

And a 28 year old w/ great credit can't get a mail offer over 30k these days. Maybe they're just on to me and my churning ways.
