Currently in flight (AA). Just had a FA tap me on the shoulder and say, "someone said they thought they saw you take a picture of the aircraft. Is that true?"

    Me: yes

FA: can I ask of what?

Me: you, handing out the cookies <shows pic on iPhone>

FA: <chuckle> oh, you're not supposed to take pictures of the crew.

Me: want me to delete it?

    FA: if you don't mind

    Me: <deletes pic>

    FA: thanks

Maybe I drink milk suspiciously.

Never heard of that one before. At is really lame and I can't see how that helps anyone. I'm going to LGA a week from today on UA (and a leg on CO), so I might do that same thing to see what they say (I anything).

    From United's website:

    http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1036,00.html

    Onboard photography and video policy

United Airlines strives to make its customer experience safe and comfortable and accordingly has issued the following policy in regard to the use of personal audio and video equipment onboard its aircraft. This policy is not a contract and does not create any legal rights or obligations.

Customers who bring personal audio and video equipment onboard may only use these items with headsets. Noise-canceling headsets may be activated. The use of still and video cameras, film or digital, including any cellular or other devices that have this capability, is permitted only for recording of personal events. However, photography, audio, or video recording of other customers without their express prior consent is strictly prohibited. Also, unauthorized photography, audio, or video recording of airline personnel, aircraft equipment, or procedures is always prohibited. Any voice, audio, video, or other photography (motion or still), recording, or transmission while on any United Airlines aircraft is strictly prohibited, except to the extent specifically permitted by United Airlines.

    --------------

When I take photos onboard, I ensure that I don't capture crew members or other pax (other than people I travel with) in such a way that they could be identified. I used that approach before I became aware of UA's policy (I suspect other airlines have similar rules) as I consider it common sense and courtesy. I have never gotten in trouble or asked to delete photos.

I agree with you, HMWT. Also, the bit about aircraft equipment I would think applies to things like pics of the galley, cockpit, cargo hold, mechanical bits, etc. Nobody is going to get on your case for taking pictures of an empty cabin, wings from your seat, the aircraft from the terminal, your tray/seat, etc. Unless you have people in them.

Totally agree with both of you. For the record, the picture did not identify anybody- the FA pictured was in profile handing out the cookies and face was obscured. And, he saw this, since I showed him the pic.

I think what happened, which I didn't mention originally, was the the flash fired, and the cabin was dark, so someone felt the need to report it. Which is why my pictures of the turkey sandwich on my return flight were so dark ;-)

Dark cabin, handing out cookies or whatever, this paranoia is utterly ridiculous. People take pictures every day in airplanes, including non-rev folks coming back from their holidays (usually from Europe, in F).

I sincerely long for a day where common sense can be applied for air travel "security," but as long as its application is embraced by the "anything for security" idiots, I'm not holding my breath.

I'm afraid I have not been and neither will I become compliant with United's audio and video policy. I like taking pictures of aircraft (whole, parts, components, etc) and will continue to do so.

Same here. Ultimately, I don't think UA cares as long as the photographs are taken with common sense. If you were to be on a plane with me and thought I was the most handsome man on earth and just needed to have a ton of photos of me lounging in my comfortable Economy Plus seat, I'd probably object and hope the FA would side with me and prevent those photos from being taken. If you happen to capture the back of my beautiful well-coiffured head in a picture that otherwise focusses on the beautiful pattern on United's economy seats, I'd be happy for you to keep it :D

That is pretty ridiculous... Last year while flying to Italy on BA, the flight attendants were laughing as we were taking pics and even gave my wife and I their santa hats to wear in some pics!

Look at the photo below. You now know why pictures should not be taken in the cabin. :D

Has anyone else thought of organizing a day when everyone takes pictures on board? Would be overwhelming for the airlines and we could report back our experiences for each airline. Maybe the day before the next Frequent Flyer Meeting.
