Taiwan's biggest air carrier China Airlines (CAL) on Wednesday officially joined SkyTeam Alliance, becoming its 15th member.

CAL's participation in the global alliance is expected to significantly expand its flight network and increase its revenue by NT$1 billion to NT$2 billion in the first year of cooperation, according to CAL Chairman Chang Chia-juch.

SkyTeam is also expected to benefit from the partnership since CAL's presence in China, alongside SkyTeam members China Eastern and China Southern, will give the alliance a boost in that market, said SkyTeam Chairman Leo van Wijk at the induction ceremony at Taiwan Taoyaun International Airport.

"We are well-positioned to synchronize to capitalize on the market's continued growth," he said at the ceremony, which was attended by all 14 SkyTeam members and four pending members.

Meanwhile, CAL said that with its inclusion in with SkyTeam's extensive flight network, it will have coverage of more than 14,500 daily flights to 926 destinations in 173 countries.

Oddly enough this will go a long way toward my reconsidering ST.... There are still several grotesque holes in WW coverage, but it is nowhere near as bad as t used to be.

Having been based in Taiwan over the last year (KHH of all places) CI was a godsend... Purser personally introduced him/herself even if I was in Y... great treatment of EP guests (also if you speak Mandarin with a Taiwanese accent;))

Will fly CI SYD-TPE-HKG in a few weeks... just wish general catering would improve....
