Suspect in San Rafael hotel standoff found dead

A suspect in a supermarket stabbing who barricaded himself in a San Rafael hotel and fired a shot at a freeway was found dead Thursday in his room, ending a standoff that stretched over two days, police said.

Peter James Thomas, 38, died sometime overnight, police said. Officers would not reveal how he died, other than to say that it was not the result of any law-enforcement action during the standoff at the Extended Stay Hotel at 1775 Francisco Blvd. E.

San Rafael police confirmed Thomas was dead by viewing footage from a video camera that a SWAT team inserted into the room after drilling a hole.

Thomas' girlfriend was in the second-floor room. "The girlfriend is OK; she's in our care," said police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher.

"She's going to be interviewed and debriefed by our investigators to determine what went on here and what her involvement was," Rohrbacher said. The woman's name was not released.

Thomas' death brought to a close an incident that forced the nearly all-day closure Wednesday of Interstate 580 near the hotel.
