After take-off, and the "Fasten Seatbelt" sign goes off, airline passengers are cautioned/required to keep their seatbelts loosely fastened at all times. Another announcement follows, this required by the Transport Security Administration under the US Department of Homeland Security: "Use the lavatories only in your section, and avoid congregating in any part of the cabin."

Makes sense, right? Part of the additional precautions taken in the aftermath of 9-11 other terrorist attacks. The SOP, if passengers disregard that second announcement and try to use another lavatory, is for the flight attendant in charge of the "invaded" lavatory to firmly and politely steer them back to their designated areas.

But now a P10-million civil suit has been lodged against PAL and flight attendant GQ Shariem for implementing that regulation -- to the tune of P6 million to be paid by both PAL and Shariem in moral damages; and P4 million to be paid by PAL equally for exemplary damages and attorney’s fees and other litigation costs of the plaintiffs.

Why? Because Shariem, per the plaintiffs, "conducted herself in a very unprofessional and rude manner," that could be considered "wanton, deliberately injurious, and with malice or bad faith, as she made unnecessary personal attacks" against one of the plaintiffs, "thereby subjecting the latter to public humiliation and embarrassment, and causing her mental anguish, wounded feelings and serious anxiety." The adjective "oppressive" is also used.

More security theater. With narrow body planes and slow service, 99 times out of 100 the flight attendant will tell a passenger to go to the loo in first class since getting around the drink cart is impossible with a full plane.
