STL Lambert Field was apparently hit by a tornado last night. The airport is closed indefinitely.

Many windows were broken in both terminals and the airport is using backup emergency generators for electrical power. Some passengers were evacuated from planes on the ground. No serious injuries have been reported.

If you are scheduled to fly through/to/from STL, you probably should contact DL ASAP. DL has been expanding service in STL during about the last year into a sort of focus city. STL was one of the "magic four" airports that had a double MQM promo in 2010.

CNN is speculating that perhaps some empty gates in the new East Terminal (Southwest) could be used by other carriers if counter space, etc. can be set up. The main historical terminal suffered much more damage. The earliest flights might be on Monday. Aircraft were damaged too.

Amazingly, there is not yet an advisory or waiver on the DL website. The first (Mesaba) flight from MSP to STL this morning is posting a delay of about two hours. I don't think they'll be leaving at noon to fly there.

AA does have a waiver through April 27 posted.

The latest for DL seems to be that they have an alert on the flight status page saying that service to/from STL is suspended, but no further info and no waiver announcement that I can find.

The airport has announced that it is closed today, except maybe for ferry flights to reposition for re-opening. The worst damage was Concourse C, with is apparently unusable for a while. Concourse A (which DL uses, gates like A2/A4/A6) is relatively OK and expected to reopen soon. Flights using Concourse B might or might not be relocated to A or the East (Southwest) terminal. TSA is"ready." The airport's goal is to have 70% of the schedule operating tomorrow, but they apparently haven't yet had much contact with airlines about this.

DL is showing this afternoon's  and tomorrow's :) flights as on time. They are selling tickets on delta.dumb, even for this afternoon's flights.

One big problem is that all aircraft on the ground must be inspected for debris damage. Some planes have reported skin damage.

These repairs could be tough to do away from a maintenance base. Also, for the skin damage, experts from Boeing could be required as this isn't the sort of work that's normally done routinely by a carrier and it's important that it be done precisely correct.

looks like a handful of flights coming in and going out tonight. Impressive that it could be started up so soon. Saw video showing shrapnel through the tail of an AA bird.

5 WN flights coming in tonight (Saturday evening). None going out. Other airlines are ferrying in planes and crews tonight. Tomorrow (Sunday) they expect 70% of scheduled flights to go. A concourse (UA, DL, CO, etc.) and E concourse (mostly WN) should be operating. C concourse (American, American Connection, some charters) will be closed. Some mothballed gates will be re-opened in the B and D concourses, and the C concourse airlines can fly out of them if the airlines can get their computer terminals working.

Clearly AA took the biggest hit here in terms of gate space. They probably also had the most extensive damage to aircraft as they would have had a lot of planes parked at STL and their gate assignments put them right in the bull's eye of the storm.

Apparently just one AA plane was damaged. An American Airlines 757 was grounded when the wind pushed a jet bridge into its nose cone and a piece of flying tin pierced its tail. One of WN's 737s was damaged when the wind pushed a belt loader into it.

I hope so, There must be people who need to return to work from the holiday weekend. Alternate airports would be a long drive, even if seats were available at this point.

Yes, hopefully the impact will be minimal on the passengers traveling through there today.
