It has been confirmed that Starwood will count Award Nights / Stays towards Status qualification (stay / night credit) effective 10/1/11.

And rumors are circulating about a new tier above Platinum (Onyx).

What kind of reaction especially regarding Hyatt's possible response to this development?

FWIW - there is denial about the new tier at this point.

+1! And also stay/night credits for FFN nights (if there will ever be one again ;) ). But it would probably be asking for too much ;)

Pretty sure this has been explicitly proven false by SPG reps already.

Award nights counting is CONFIRMED - the new tier isn't (there is a hedging post about a survery but no explicit denial).

I'd very much appreciate if award nights counted towards status. With airlines I can choose to fly for status while using my miles for companions. With hotels it's not that easy for me as I don't often need a second room.

That said, I have pretty much concluded that next year I will only aim for Platinum status. I had a lot of travel this year and yet I still need three MR nights to renew Diamond (I'll do that this year). It just seems beyond my natural "level" in most years and instead of spending a ton of money on ultimately unnecessary or more expensive nights I will invest it into room upgrades (think: club upgrades) where and when it really matters.

I'd rather have FFN return and no response to the SPG rumored new tier!

What about Hyatt making Platinum more like Marriott and Hilton Gold where you get access to the club floors, if available? Diamonds should get guaranteed club access and ought to have the benefit of guaranteed award bookings even if a standard room is unavailable. I would like to see award stays and nights count towards status as Hilton and SPG do.

the "if available" makes this a benefit that isn't very interesting to me. I generally want to know what I can expect when I make my booking and not count on the program knowledge and mood of the FD agent. If it was all semi transparent and automated such as the UDU system on UACO, that would be one thing, but I can't see that happening.

I agree it should have a defined system for upgrades to the Club floors. With Hilton Gold, you will be upgraded to an Executive floor room as long as this room is available: i.e. can be booked at arrival or allocated before check-in. Otherwise, you are upgraded to the best available room.

I think that Platinum (5 stays/15 nights) is a pretty low threshhold for club access, especially given that Hyatt clubs tend to be a bit better than Marriott's. As a point of reference, Marriott requires 50 nights for gold.

Or no stays and just the Visa card.

Not comepletely clear on which Visa card to which you refer. Yes, the Marriott Visa provides one night elite credit per $3000 spent. If this is the one you meant, that means $150,000 in spend for Gold. I would advise anyone with that kind of spend to direct it to more favorable cards.

Hyatt Visa gives you Platinum status "instantly" with no spend requirement.

Sorry, I meant the Hyatt VISA, which as Peter clarified guarantees Platinum status just for having the card.
