St Regis Tianjin and Sanya poised to open:)

The St Regis Tianjin and Sanya are both poised to open in October and November respectively.

The 276-room St Regis Tianjin, located in the Heping financial district, is a remarkable 18-storey glass and steel structure in the shape of a hollow cube resembling a “gateway”.

The 401-room St Regis Sanya resort, located along Yalong Bay, will offer a completely different flavour.

I've noticed a number of buildings in this hollow cube style throughout Asia and especially China. There's an apartment building visible from the W Hong Kong that has the distinctive big square hole in it and there's another that seems to be a government office building with a museum perhaps in the ground floor that was built near the monorail on the island in Tokyo Bay. I think I've seen it in Shanghai too and maybe Singapore, but I don't know of any major examples outside of Asia.

If I remember correctly, the first I ever saw was in The Bourne Identity. JB was allegedly approaching a yacht broker's office in Marseille, I believe.

I can't picture such a building in Marseille, but I was last there about five years ago.

LOL. Well, the thing about movie locations is that sometimes they are not where they say they are. For instance, in this same movie, Montreal and Prague substituted for locations in Paris in many scenes. It might have been a different city than Marseille, but I doubt seriously it was in Asia because no filming for this particular Bourne film was done there.

We have a reservation here for October 27. Since I chickened out in Bangkok and changed our reservation away from the almost-open St. Regis in favor of the Hyatt, I am excited to see this one. Anyone nearby who can comment on whether it appears on schedule and ready for Prime Time?

Wow, that opening rate is great!. Too bad I was in Tianjin a month early, although the Astor was a great experience as well.

The hotel looked pretty much ready to go from the outside when I was in Tianjin 10 days ago.

    Received this today -- disappointed!
The purpose of this letter is to advise you that due to delays in the construction of the The St. Regis Tianjin, the hotel needs to delay its opening 30th October 2011. Subsequently the hotel is no longer be able to honour your current reservation.
