We’re excited to announce the details of our newest promotion, SPG® Double Take, coming soon.

    - Earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays.
    - Plus, earn 500 additional bonus Starpoints for stays booked through our spg.com mobile site, the SPG App for iPhone or the SPG App for Android.

All earnings are from May 1 through July 31, 2013. Stay earnings are at over 1,000 participating hotels and resorts worldwide (a list of properties that opted out can be found on our Double Take page). The booking bonuses are eligible at all Starwood hotels and resorts that participate in the SPG program, regardless of whether or not the hotel is participating in this promotion.

Earnings are unlimited, and the registration window will begin late April. In the meantime you can visit spg.com/doubletake to learn more, and to sign up for a text message reminder alerting you when registration begins (text messages are available for U.S. and U.K. members).

As always, would love any feedback you have about the promotion.

    Best regards,

Nice and straight forward. The booking bonus being decoupled from the opt-out list is a nice touch as well, I would say.

Glad for the details of the new promo. Disappointed that there's going to be a gap in promos though (Power Up ends 4/15, this one starts 5/1), considering I have a few nights that are gonna be left out at the end of April. At higher-priced places too. :(

Back to the routine I used during the previous promo that gave points for booking with the ipad app: check all rates first on spg.com using either a computer or my ipad, find what I want, then try to find it (and the same inventory in terms of room category and bed type) on the ipad. If this doesn't work, call Plat Concierge. It's a waste of time for both me and Plat Concierge, plus it doesn't make me more likely to use the app when doing so doesn't earn promo points. Frustrating and annoying that the app isn't as efficient for making reservations as the website is.

    It does say:

Most desktop browsers either support or have plugins to support viewing the page in mobile format. You'd have to use that site format, but could do it from a desktop. It is strange that they don't give a bonus for booking via spg.com's 'regular' site, too... but simple enough to work around.

Perhaps using the mobile version of the website is easier/better for this than the stand-alone application? I might recon this myself, since I always just request the full desktop website if I'm on a tablet. I don't have any experience with the mobile site. I agree with your assessment of the actual app. so it would be nice if the mobile version of the website offered a better experience.

What does it say about me that some of my most frequent hotels are on the opt out list (and are my preferred spots in those towns)?

That is what struck me about this promo compared to HHonors' Q2 promo: "over 1,000 participating hotels and resorts worldwide" for the SPG promo compared to "over 3,900 hotels and resorts in the Hilton HHonors portfolio." Does this reflect the relative sizes of the two chains, or is it simply that many more SPG hotels opted out of the promo than did HHonors hotels?

There are many more Hilton family hotels than Starwoods. I would guess that the numbers are about 5,000 versus a bit over 1,000 worldwide, although it might be true that Starwood is growing faster.

Really disappointed with the gap in promos since I have multiple stays between 4/15 and 5/1.

If that's the case, why would they need a promo to incent your stays? You've already booked them. :)

    Because they're refundable.

The point being you've already booked them. In other words, when SPG looks at their bookings for the next quarter, they already see your booked stays, so that counts against the need for a promo (in consideration with what the competition offers, etc.). And the point of a promo is to incent booking behavior... which in your case, with booked stays, is already done.

The fact that they're refundable gives you great choice should another chain have a promo that incents you more, but it doesn't play into SPG's decision in any significant way because most folks won't change already planned stays.

Since you are pushing the app more and more, I wish you would update it for a more robust iPad version.
