Just received a "nontransferable" offer by mail for 3,000 bonus UA airmiles per 3 nights stayed at SPG hotels (up to 9,000 miles) AND complimentary SPG gold status through February, 2012.

Registration with a code# AND flipping to the Airline Direct Deposit program (instead of SPG points) is required. Not tied to any CC program. Good May through August, 2011.

Have not flown UA this year, .and have not stayed @ a Westin for 6 months. No clue why "selected", as usual. Program is called "Gold 9000UA" , if you want to ask them for it.

I have really liked SPG points for their versatlity/convertibility. Does anyone know if a move to the Airline Direct Deposit program is reversable later, or is this just the bait to get one out of the SPG points program for good? I could use some extra UA miles, but not if I'd lose the "25k miles for 20k points" with all the other airlines in the future.

As far as I know you can switch over to points later on. I had been on airline miles at one point and was able to switch no problem...

I was on airline miles from SPG at one point and switched with no problems, but apparently the nights from those years are not included in my lifetime stays and nights data. I think this feature may have changed.

I switched back and forth during US Airways' Grand Slam promo -- just had to wait for the night(s) in question to post before switching. But did have to telephone SPG to switch back to Starwood points.

I also got this mailing, I discover as I return home from a long trip. But I am already SPG Platinum, so I certainly don't want Gold -- anyone who already has SPG status get this offer and register? The extra miles sound good, as it would also be "double dipping," wouldn't it, with the current SPG "Stay 3 get a resort night" offer?

Yes, this can double dip with the current SPG promo for FRNs.

IMO, this would have to be a decision based on personal circumstances such as how many Starpoints you usually earn per stay and whether you earn with an SPG credit card. Until you cancel, you're directing all of your hotel-generated Starpoints to UA. If that's where you want them, great. But if you might instead want to hold onto Starpoints until an airline offers a promo like US's current conversion promo (25% - 75% bonus) through May 31, that might be more lucrative.

I've never heard of a problem with Plats signing up for one of these offers that comes with Gold status. I wouldn't worry about being downgraded.

From my understanding of how airline deposit works, yes. Does someone here have personal experience to confirm this?

    Edited to add:
Negative. Thanks to SPG Champion's info below!

Not by my understanding. The only Starpoints that would be transferred to the airline in a direct deposit situation would be those garnered from a hotel-generated transaction. That would include any bonuses such as welcome amenity points and from promotional earnings that post along with the stay. If the promotional bonus or the welcome amenity is applied separately from the stay, however, they would remain in the member's SPG account and not be automatically transferred.
