OK... is Obama coming to Austin around April 21st or what else is in town.... Im seeing Dubai type rates for all SPG properties in this area... I had heard that Austin was not a bargain in general, but $800 for a hotel night must mean something, or....?

I noticed that last month when checking on Austin dates for this month. It seemed like all the weekends were very pricey.

LOL. Well, with full disclosure, these events are also happening that weekend:

    Old Settler's Music Festival:
    Apr 19 - Apr 22
    Austin Reggae Festival:
    Apr 20 - Apr 22

That being said, I'm seeing The Westin at The Domain at $199+ and the Aloft at The Domain at $159 and no availability at all at the W Austin or the Sheraton Austin at the Capitol for that weekend.

Nothing to do with SPG, but rental cars are out of sight that weekend also. Mostly airport taxes, so maybe $100 a day is normal for Austin.

wow.... well, I will stay in San Antonio then.... rather drive 30ish miles and pay well under $100 than have to pay almost $200 for a room....

If you stay in San Antonio and drive to Austin, the travel distance is more like 90ish miles. There is road construction going on in some parts of IH35, so allow at least 2 hours.

My bad. They've only changed the race date three times since it was announced.

Regarding the weekend of October 5 - 7, however, in addition to the Harvey Penick Invitational Golf Tournament, the Texas Longhorns are hosting the West Virginia Mountaineers at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium in a bout of gridrion on October 6th.

Forget trying to get a cheap rate anywhere in Austin on a UT football weekend.

Events aside.... isnt Austin considered the most expensive large city in Texas....? Im sure there are areas of Houston and Dallas that are just as pricey, but I was once told that on average (what ever that means), life in Austin is the most expensive in Texas.

From a purely economic standpoint, Austin ranked 3rd in Texas in 2007 according to this report:

    http://austin.ynn.com/content/top_stories/191127/austin-is-3rd-most-expensive-texas-city

Ft. Worth was ranked first. Not sure where the city is at the moment, but the entity that did the report in 2007 is: http://www.cppp.org/

There may or may not have been a new report since then.
