Amex gave me a points advance last month and I need to pay back , my original plan was my wife opening a spg card and merging the accounts to pay back my account but after speaking to Amex it seems that since Amex loaned me the points and not spg so it won't work . Plan b was referring my wife for the card which gives a bonus but can't figure out if that's from Amex or spg??

Welcome to Milepoint. You should have up to 12 months to earn the points and pay back, unless they have recently changed their policy. If the card you refer her to is an SPG card, the points will not be membership rewards points, they will be SPG.

So the only way to pay back amex is by actually doing the spend no bonus would go as a pay back to Amex

I am unclear. Were the points that were advanced SPG points or Amex Membership Rewards points? If the points were SPG points then it was Starwood that did the advance.....not Amex.

I've never heard of points advance through SPG Amex cards. It's possible, but I think this is likely the (now defunct) borrowing program through MR.

Maybe it was an MR advance that was used to convert to SPG pts?

that sound likely, although the conversion rate is not favorable.

Amex does not advance SPG points. They only advance membership rewards points, and that has been discontinued.

Odd. I've never heard of AMEX advancing points on an SPG card.
