I was listening to an off duty NYC Starwood Concierge tell an employee at a local Manhattan retail store that he doesn't work for Starwood, and that he's an outsourced employee.

He tells people that ask that he works for Guest Services (or something like that). IMHO, that suggests that he works for Starwood.

That would make sense if he works for a hotel that Starwood doesn't own or manage. He would not be a Starwood employee, but rather an employee of the company that manages or owns the property.

It is possible that he works for a hotel's Guest Services department, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he works directly for Starwood, if Starwood doesn't own or manage the property.

Apparently this is quite common in the concierge business, worldwide. I recall reading about this several years ago.

I thought all NYC hotel employees belong to a union.

Every story of dhammer53 is valid. :) And yes, concierge functions at hotels are often run by a third party, and they aren't hotel employees.
