    Dear members,

Let me share the following piece of exciting news with you.

SPG members can now connect their SPG and foursquare accounts and earn bonus Starpoints and more for foursquare check-in's. Here are some of the exciting things we have going on over the next few months:

    - Between now and July 31, 2011, members who link their SPG and foursquare accounts will earn 250 bonus Starpoints for every foursquare check in with a confirmed reservation at any of our more than 1,000 Starwood hotels and resorts. There are no limits to the bonus Starpoints a member can earn during this promotion (and yes, it's combinable with SPG Getaway Free).

    - Plus, for the month of May we are hiding Free Resort Night Awards daily throughout our hotels and resorts and members who check in via foursquare have an opportunity to unlock and win a free resort night.

    - With each foursquare check in through July 31, you'll also be entered to win a resort getaway, including five Free Resort Night Awards plus airfare.

    - Finally, each month SPG will declare the member with greatest number of foursquare check in's at any of our hotels and resorts as the new "SPG Mayor". In addition to bragging rights, your mayoral duties will include sharing your favorite insider travel tips and destination hotspots with fellow frequent travelers around the globe.

Go to spg.com/socialcheckins to get started in connecting your accounts and to spg.com/foursquare for a list of the current promotional details.

Come August there will be additional foursquare promotions that will vary during the year.

Since this is a new space that SPG has entered into, we of course look forward to any questions or feedback you may have. Do let us know.

    Thank you.

  2. The statement in bold seems to differ to similar promotions, particularly "check ins" through Topguest. In which you do not need to prove that you have a room reservation to benefit. So for example, when I have a meeting, visiting the gym, having dinner etc at my local Holiday Inn, I can still benefit. It seems a shame to exclude these customers at SPG locations but I am happy to see more programs joining in.

On the other hand, SPG may rather be learning from those other offers since you don't even need to be anywhere near a hotel property to check in via Foursquare and get points through Topguest. Will be interesting to see what sort of system they've built to verify reservations against Foursquare checkins, how this works in practice. But my hunch is that they don't want folks across town checking in daily for points. And 250 points with a reservation is worth at least a good dozen or more checkins without one through Priority Club...

I take the T&Cs to mean that the requirement for a confirmed reservation only applies to getting the 250 Starpoints per check-in. Checking in on Foursquare without a hotel reservation still gets you entries into the daily and grand prize sweepstakes mentioned above.

Limits to the 250 Starpoints bonus: "Only one (1) Foursquare check in per member per property will be eligible to earn 250 bonus Starpoints within a 24 hour period."

So on a multi-night stay at a property, one can check-in on Foursquare daily to collect 250 Starpoints per night, correct?

The eligible hotels for checking in for the 250 bonus points and for sweepstakes entries are any of the 1000+ hotels that normally participate in SPG. The eligible hotels for redeeming the FRN awards from the daily and grand prize sweepstakes are the same 200+ hotels that are in the current FRN promo.

I'm sure there are a few properties in which I could be Mayor. Just remember not to infringe upon my kingdom.

Ugh +1. But I also found out about FaceBook Purity which blocks checkins and similar annoyances so recommend my friends get that the better to tune me out.

Foursquare doesn't require you to propagate your check-ins to Facebook (or Twitter). Indeed, since you must authorize SPG direct access to your Foursquare data for this promotion, you may not even have to check in publicly to qualify. (For example, Topguest doesn't require public check-ins; checking in "off the grid" works fine.)

Indeed... I have a 4sq account specifically for topguest, which is now linked to SPG as well. My routine will now include nearby SPG properties and/or Chrome check-ins, even though it seems this has been problematic all day today.

One does NOT need a confirmed reservation for an entry into the sweepstakes; however; one does have to link their Foursquare and SPG accounts per the directions. But, just “checking in” to one of our hotels (regardless of reservation) can give you an entry.

No. Only 250 bonus Starpoints is being given per confirmed and consumed reservation. You can check in 5x during your stay, but you’ll still only get 250 bonus Starpoints from this offer.

Maybe I am just an old fart, but I am truly sick of getting pushed towards this social media crap all the time. Just signed up on FourSquare and it seems like the usual drivel of people doing nothing thinking that someone is interested in their boring lives.

You don't need a reservation at all for that part of the Foursquare check-in promo. That's the daily sweepstakes. Just check in on Foursquare at an SPG property, and you're entered in that day's drawing for a free FRN.

For the Stay 3 Get 1 FRN earnings promo, you have to have 3 eligible stays.

Well perhaps you are, but that doesn't mean you need to participate. :)

I keep about 150 or so facebook friends, all people that I know personally and speak with on a consistent basis. I'd rather take the rare glance into what they're up to than get the chain letter emails and other nonsense -- which incidentally seem to have ceased as of late.

Foursquare and the whole location based social stuff is another ball of wax altogether. I used to think that it was nonsense as well, until one day when I fired it up and it told me I could get dessert for free at the Andaz on Wall Street if I checked in there.

I still don't use it like "all the damn kids" out there posting that they're going to the bathroom or eating a sandwich, but I've learned to use it as just another tool to benefit me in particular, whether that's free dessert or points from Topguest.

One need not have a confirmed reservation if all you are doing is checking in on Foursquare to earn an entry in the sweepstakes.

I wonder why only these countries are eligible for the sweepstakes. What have we done in Denmark? :(

I misunderstood the daily prizes. I initially thought it was more of a scavenger hunt where if you checked in at the "lucky" hotel you would win the daily prizes. FYI SPG, I really enjoyed that concept even though you overlooked my city ;)

    Thanks for the clarification.
