I've noticed lately that it doesn't seem to matter what I say when I check in at the front desk about opting for the Green option. If I don't hang the Green card outside the door AND make sure I do it early enough, I don't get the little card that I trade in at the front desk for points on checkout.

Now this latest Four Points stay I put the thing outside my door when I checked in around 7pm. By 9 or 10pm I had my card. Odd I thought. So when I was leaving the room this morning I knocked the card off the door and figured it didn't matter and didn't put it back on. So when I get back to the room tonight the room has been made up, new towels, etc.

Now I assume that's not supposed to happen. I assume the maids are supposed to look at some master list. But at least in this case they didn't.

So with SPG hotels (or is it the service staff?) for some reason seemingly pushing to reduce the number of people opting for/getting Green bonuses successfully, are they screwing themselves/the hotel somehow?

Are you sure the property/properties you are staying in participate? The program vary's from property to property. http://www.starwoodpromos.com/sheratongreenchoice

I got screwed at the Sheraton LIM.

They didn't credit the points into the account after checking out so I will probably need to submit a claim for that.

ETA: Took care of it online and it was very painless so I appreciate the customer service folks at SPG for helping rectify this. :)

Yup, as I said I've found that I have to leave the Green card (the door hanger that's usually on the bed or perhaps on the bedside table next to the bed) hanging on the doorknob in the evening in order to receive the cards which you hand in. Sometimes I miss one of the cards because I didn't hang the card up early enough. Generally if I notice I'm short I just take care of it via online chat or email with customer service and they ALWAYS fix it. So no issue really, but something to note.

Just a random thought. I'm just wondering, if a lot of people take advantage of this program, then the housekeeping staff will have less work to do. I am uncertain what their compensation structure is (assuming hourly?), does that mean that they will work less hours and get paid less too? Or do they get to leave their shift early?

Yeah, I don't know. I do know that I've seen this change at two different SPG hotels (a Four Points and a Sheraton). Different between how it was for a couple of years, and how it has been the last few months. Doesn't mean its corporate, just a data point.

Stayed recently at the Sheraton New Orleans and had my green card out in time but never got points for green house keeping
credited to my Starwood account even when I alerted the front desk on check in and they said I'm all set. Oh well more work
    to be done
