Question regarding booking the Free Resort Night.

I have reservations already at the Sheraton Waikiki for 9/2-9/4, but am looking to move over to the Royal Hawaiian using my FRN's. When I go to Hotels.com I can book a Garden View room for $330/night, but when I call the SPG Platinum hotline they indicate that no standard rooms are available for use of the FRN during that time period. Given that a Garden View room is the standard room at this hotel, how is it possible that I can book that room on hotels.com but not through SPG?

Is this a common occurence or what am I missing here?

Unfortunately, the FRN is not guaranteed to be available for use just because rooms are available for purchase. As an alternative, I would take a look at the Moana Surfrider hotel. There recently was availability there.

It's not a common occurrence, but in this instance hotels.com has bought inventory from the Royal Hawaiian at a wholesale rate, so it has the diminished availability that the resort (or Starwood) can offer on its own.

The bottom line is that the standard rooms must be able to be sold through Starwood in order for there to be award rooms.

Thank you for the explanation. I did think it was a bit unusual, but I understand the situation.
