Next week I'll have about 5 hours between flights at SFO. I'd welcome suggestions from milepointers on creative and interesting ways to spend the time either at the airport or in the vicinity. I do have a free rental car day on National and lots of Hilton Honors points.

    Mahalo nui loa!

Time of day? Arriving or departing internationally? Been in the area before?

There's a little museum of flight IIRC to the left as you enter the international terminals, which also has some interesting artwork.

    Will you have lounge access?

Arrive at 3pm United domestic, depart at 9pm Lufthansa intl. Lounge access: Star Alliance Gold/United Club

I've been in the area many times before, so I'm hoping for some creative, interesting or unusual ideas!

    Thanks!

Take a hotel shuttle to one of the airport hotels south of the airport, walk the Bay Trail and watch airplanes land at SFO. Have dinner at one of the restaurants (Max's perhaps), then take shuttle back to airport, skip meal on flight and get more sleep.

I like your idea a lot. Great way to stretch my legs before the longer flight. I haven't been to Max's before, but I checked the menu (http://www.maxsworld.com/maxs/map.php?id=17) and it sounds great. Also, the pedestrian overpass to Burlingame is in that area too. Thanks!

Max's turned out to be great! Easy to get to-- just take the shuttle that serves the Holiday Inn Express in Burlingamw.

    Thanks, Have Miles...!

Same question, different timing. I'll be arriving SFO 1 December ex NRT at 9:10, departing 19:45 for YEG. I have *A Gold status, and hence lounge access. (Flying United)

Any ideas? We will be two.

If you have more than a few hours at SFO You could jump on BART and go downtown and wonder around the city. Cab would be faster but either way isn't too bad except during rush hours.

Thanks. Is there a place at the airport where we will be able to check our carry-on luggage?
