Southwest Airlines said Monday it will offer double points on its Rapid Rewards program for flights booked and flown between Monday and May 15. The promotion requires customers to register for the promotion online at

In addition, it announced several changes to its schedule and that of subsidiary AirTran Airways for August:

    – Southwest will replace AirTran service in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Aug. 11 with flights to four airports – Baltimore, Orlando, Denver and St. Louis. Southwest will offer six Grand Rapids flights a day, compared to AirTran’s three flights as of early August.

    – Also on Aug. 11, AirTran will begin new daily flights from Memphis to Chicago Midway, Baltimore and Orlando. At present, AirTran flies only to Atlanta from Memphis.

“As we bring Southwest into Grand Rapids, we’re not simply swapping airlines, we’re adding new cities, we’re bringing in larger airplanes and flying more flights,” EVP Ron Ricks said in Southwest’s announcement.

“Similarly, on the AirTran side, we’re nearly doubling the number of flights in and out of Memphis which provides low fare competition to more destinations with more seats,” Ricks said.
