Standing for ages at IAH to board UA1178 to SFO, the lines became long and unruly. For anyone who newly approached the gate, it was almost impossible to determine which line was Group 1 (which ended up with about 80 people in it). Then two people stopped with their baggage over to the right of Group 1 and then a 3rd person thinking that THAT was the line stopped behind them. Soon a rogue line was forming of people who honestly thought that they were in the right place.

I went up and mentioned the problem to the person in charge of GS pax, and "Sorry, that's not my job" was the response.

"Sorry, that's not my job." is a phrase that no UA (or any employee) should ever utter. How about, "Oh, sorry about that. I'll find someone to take care of that." instead?

Totally an unacceptable response. That said, it is possible the agent was having a bad day or felt like they just couldn't do anything given the (sounds like out-of-control) situation. I'm not an apologist, but I try to let these things go when they happen to me. Tweet or send a short message to customer relations. I'm assuming they will know who was staffing the gate.

That's a phrase UA employees utter constantly. Like the door that was sticking a bit on a flight I was on and the ground staff asked the FA to give it a bit of a push from the inside - "Sorry, that's not my job."

With many of UA's GA's facing possible outsourcing to subcontractors, maybe the employee was just foreshadowing?

    And the answer is: Unions.

Hardly - and unions might just save a job or two for a beleaguered airline employee - or perhaps not. I'm sure that there's a lot more to the story about the general chaos in the airport due to weather-related delays, and just maybe a good dose of FYKWIA from those affected directed towards airline employees.

What I meant was, unions are to blame.

And I countered that is a knee-jerk statement, that just might fail to address all possible reasons for this event.

Perhaps. But it's much easier to give that answer knowing that they have a union behind their back in case they are reprimanded.
