I'm an ex-consultant and have been enjoying Diamond status this year while burning through my points. I've only had 4 paid stays this year though, and at this point it looks unlikely that I'll have another before December 31. Does anyone know if I'll soft land at Platinum if I don't get in that last stay?

If not, is Platinum status worth a mattress run given that my personal travel will likely be only 2-4 stays in 2012?

One hotel stay at a $50 a night hyatt place would be worth it just to be able to get the free internet (since it pays for 4 stays of internet right there) and any other perks are just bonus.

Dont forget that the Hyatt credit card also grants platinum status to all cardholders as long as you have the card

IIRC, the Hyatt T&C mention about those who qualify for Diamond and then don't requalify. I interpret the statements to say that you are "soft landed" to Platinum, but you should check this yourself before deciding whether to try for a cheap stay yet this year. Do you want to take the risk? Also, have you considered calling the Gold Passport folks and asking?

My understanding is that, at least in the recent past, Hyatt's practice has been to offer soft landings.

If only I could find $50/night Hyatt Places. Fremont, for example, seems to go for $79 on "cheap" weekends.

I've been having good luck, there are lots of them here in ATL. During one of the 48 hour sales, the price was only $48 for one in a decent location

Another possibility is a property that offers a stay-and-park rate. One HP near me (close to FLL) has a $129 rate that includes a room night, up to 14 days of parking and r/t transport to the airport on their shuttle (parking in the airport's off-property remote economy lot would cost about $105, as a comparison).

perhaps a fellow MPer could help you out who lives in an area where there are 'cheap' hyatts?

I've started to do this with a SPG property at MSP. It's fun to think of my car earning a stay/night credit as well as saving me money while I'm off at a much better hotel.

I thought I tried it. Does it drop the Fremont rate? My plan is actually to MR the HR Santa Clara with Costco. $71 and up but 1K diamond amenity and 2.5k club closure.

At least you have $79. I have yet to get into the hotel game because there's nothing cheap around SEA. Even after the Hotel Sierra acquisition, the best options will be about $100 and I'll have to drive to Bellevue (with all those Eastsiders *shudder*).

Some weekends it worked for me in the past. But you're right, Santa Clara is the better deal, especially with the points. Plus, I prefer the breakfast there over the HP. :)

Well, I wouldn't actually stay and certainly not drive another 40 miles back just for breakfast. Maybe I could hang out in the parking lot for a bit and try to sell off the breakfast vouchers :)

Does Hyatt ever have a Diamond challenge to regain status, like Hilton offers?

Sometimes at the beginning of the year but not always (not in the last year or 2).
