Who knows, but you only have to go for the interview once. And plenty of people on the mainland drive much longer distances to an airport for something like a Global Entry interview.

Heck, it's simply politics at work. The HI gummint workers are in ITO, and the tourists are in KOA. So you live near Kona and are complaining about the drive to Hilo? Lucky you live Hawaii, Bruddah! :p

I guess I mis-titled the post. Yes, the drive to Hilo isn't the worst thing on earth, I just don't understand why I (we) are suddenly persona non grata and have to re-apply for a status we already had.

Because you didn't really have it, I'm guessing.

The airlines worked with the TSA to offer a chance at access for some elite members so that the Feds could make sure the system worked. But you were not actually enrolled in a Trusted Traveler program.

I don't think anyone should have to pay for Trusted Traveler it and wish the TSA would better staff those facilities as the usage increases, but you weren't really in the program before.

Gosh, I felt like I was in the program. Maybe I was absent that day of school when they told me I really wasn't.

Wandering Aramean is right - it's now "pay to play" if you want to maintain a TSA pre-check status through the DHS "Trusted Traveler Program", see:

    http://www.dhs.gov/trusted-traveler-programs

Many of the frequent flyer bloggers have warned about this coming at the beginning of this year.

I just got Pre-Check for my flight today through my FFP and not through a Trusted Traveler program. I think the odds are just lower now.

This all feels so 1984. The name DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY has always given me the willies. I guess I will go ahead, I'm sure Big Brother will take care of me.
