One of the most bizarre stories I have ever heard:

Skywest employees arrive to the St. George, UT (SGU) airport this morning to find a CRJ-200 which had been RON was lodged into a ditch

It turns out that a Skywest pilot, who was wanted for murder, was trying to escape in the plane. He broke into it, started it up, and wanted to fly away. Unfortunately he clipped either a jetway or another aircraft and then crashed through a fence and into parked cars. He then killed himself.

Skywest is headquartered in St. George, a small city in southwest Utah, nearer to Las Vegas than SLC

Wow....I mean...wow. I don't even know what to say to that. Not even one of normally smart ass remarks about it. Glad he killed himself though, instead of crashing a plane full of people into the ground or something like PSA 1771 back in the 80s.

Why does the third photo have tail that looks like delta, and the other photos appear to have a white tail?

I'm guessing that they covered (or maybe painted over) the tail as fast as they could in order to keep the Delta logos out of the press photos.

That was the earliest photo taken. After that Delta made sure their logo got removed or covered up. You can still see the navy blue at the top of the tail, so they left that

Outsourced to Taiwan, perhaps? Aren't they specialized to produce these at super short notice?

Nice SkyWest logos on the animated plane's tail and body. What keeps the press from even mentioning that this SkyWest plane was associated with Delta Connection? Did the reporters just not know?

ABC's national news video did mention Delta Connection.

(video link is on the side and includes similar animation goodness + other strange video production quirks such as the section in fast forward at 1:05. Direct video link.)

The implications of course are hideous, but one has to make this
smart-ass remark: the guy had to have been insane - he tried to
    steal a CRJ.

Why are you listening to the press who keep saying this? He was a SkyWest captain. He knew how to taxi, takeoff, fly, and land (and scale a razorwire fence). You aren't praising him for intentionally wrecking a CRJ (and damaging another)? #sar

Moral of the story: Girls make guys go crazy

It's some crazy stuff. I was getting text message alerts from the news here (never did shut that off after the wildfire insanity...) while it was happening because of the murder in Colorado Springs.

I assume we'll never know, but did this guy think he could just fly to Mexico like the fugitives who drive/ride across the border in the movies? Or did he plan his flight to be a suicide mission and we can be lucky that the collateral damage didn't amount to more than a CRJ, and parts of a terminal building?

See what happens when you rush and forget to go through the checklist. You can't make this kind of stuff up.

I wonder whether they fuel the planes on arrival the night before or do it in the morning. The next flight for the aircraft would have been to SLC which is no more than 250 miles away. Not sure he could have made it very far. Maybe it would be good practice not to refuel aircraft until the next morning.

Story is just crazy. There are some aerial photos of the airport. For the aircraft to end up where it did, it must have had a lot of momentum before hitting a structure, or else it was just a bizarre form of suicide. He got it pointed 180 away from the runway, at best he would have been in a low speed taxi intending to turn toward the runway. So not only did he have a crazy plan, he executed it poorly. I guess that's why he worked for a regional carrier, not mainline?
