Posted by one of the DL reps on FT (LINK):

We wanted to let you know about our new rate announcement first, since we know that many of you are members of Delta Sky Clubs. Later today, we will be updating our paid membership rates for new and renewing members. Information will be on delta.com shortly.

Over the last two years, we’ve invested more than $20 million in Delta Sky Clubs. This includes opening new clubs and renovating existing clubs, removing conference rooms to provide more seating, introducing the Luxury Bar and, of course, the recently announced Sky Decks that will open in Atlanta and JFK later this year.

So that we can continue delivering upgrades and amenities like these, for the first time in three years, we find it necessary to adjust our membership rates. As of March 1, 2013 our rates will increase by no more than $50 per membership. This change will not impact your current membership contract. Full details on the increase will be available at delta.com/skyclub shortly.

We wanted you to be the first to know about this change so that you can renew under the existing rates before March 1 before the new rates go into effect in March.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and we look forward to continuing to improve the Delta Sky Clubs.

Why would a Silver or General Member get a Sky Club membership when the Delta Reserve Amex's annual fee is $450 and comes with the same? And the Amex Platinum annual fee is also $450, and gets you into Delta lounges when flying Delta same-day but also into AA lounges (when flying AA same-day), US lounges (any time) and comes with a Priority Pass Select (unlimited visits for one person, second person at a fee, includes Alaska lounges)?

Credit worthiness perhaps? I know some who have cards of some sort, but have trashed their credit. Getting an AMEX Plat could be a challenge...

Although your quick summary makes a lot of sense!

I often wondered how they determine whom to turn away when the clubs are full. I imagine "genuine" paid members are more likely to be admitted than, say, an Amex plat cardholder. Has anyone ever been turned away?

Presumably it's whomever turns up when the club is full, have you ever been turned away because they're too busy? And if it's that busy is it really where you want to be?

I have never seen them turn anyone away. I counted the people in one of the ATL clubs and found it to be 13 people over the fire marshall maximum occupancy. Of course that may just be a suggestion.

Although I would love to see the DM DYKWIA that is refused access!!

    Translation:

We've removed (or are removing) all the self-service bars to control liquor costs, but now we have bartenders that we need to pay. Not to mention the cost of that "real" cheese!!!

I know the cheese used to be fake, but I'm pretty sure Tillamook is real...;)

All of the ones I've been in, yes, but I tend to fly LHR-hub-LAX/SoCal

I have the AMEX regular Platinum card and have never been denied access to any airline club full or otherwise. I don't think AMEX would look too lightly on such a slight. They pay DL for every entry by one of their members as I recall.

The Reserve membership is much more restricted than a full SkyClub membership. The Reserve basically only gets you into Delta operated lounges, which is around 35 or so. A full SkyClub membership gets you into lots of partner lounges, well over 100.

And as you note, the Amex Platinum card is far more useful than the Delta Reserve card as well.

The real trick is to stack status with other discount rates that have been published on this forum or that other one and then do a three year renewal.

For my case, the numbers worked out to be very cost effective !

That's what I did. Status and a coupon offer gave me a 3 year membership at less than a cost of a 1 year joint with status. I make up for the cost of membership in drink savings in just a few months. :D

I've seen a 10% off code - have you seen anything better than that? :)

I bought (well, renewed) my SC membership for 3 yrs in Dec, as I figured the cost would go up. I'm good for a couple years. I will re-evaluate in 2016.

As to Plat Amex - right now it would cost me more than SC. Also, Plat Amex gets you into the club of the airline you are flying (not into SC if you are not on DL....Ditto AMEX Reserve card, as pointed out above).

If UA hadn't already done this with their UC memberships, this move by could be called [IMG] best in class [IMG] But since UA preempted them, that wouldn't be fair.

And if the DL SC product bore any resemblance to the location where I'm sitting now (i.e. the SQ SKL @ BKK) then it might actually be worth the money.... I'l help myself to some more lamb rogan josh while I browse DL SM Milepoint....on the way to RGN as usual these days.

I'm guessing you can write off the access from business taxes or get it reimbursed by your employer?
