Hi everyone! I'm new to this world of points and miles, and dang there's a lot of stuff out there.

I'm still trying to figure out what I can, sign up for award programs, etc. I don't have a lot of points accumulated anywhere really - 29k on AA, 22k on Delta, and my not much of anything for any at the hotels, but I'm ready to start filling them up. It kind of makes me sick at what I've lost through the years with work travel, personal travel, etc. Oh well, better get started.....

My first question is about two single night hotel stays that I have coming up before the end of the month. We are headed out on vacation and will need a single night hotel stay on the way there and on the way back. I've looked at a lot of the promotions, and some don't start until Sept., some required registration back in the summer, some are consecutive two night stays, etc. My question is, what is the best thing going right now for this type of reservation? Airline miles, hotel points? Since I'm just now getting into these programs, I don't have a lot of targeted offers yet.

I would be appreciative of any ideas.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to MP, trouty31!

I usually recommend acquiring hotel points over airline miles for hotel stays - the exception is HHonors (Hilton) which allows accrual of both.

The Hilton brands have a thing going on right now that fits your August time frame, AND, there's still time to register, but the promo is limited to certain properties.

Jett Rink is milking the Marriott cow to the end of the month, but for that promo you had to register by June 30.

I'd say stack the IHG promos... you can easily turn a couple of single night stays into quite a bit of points with all the promos they have going on now.

    Thanks for the welcome!

I have booked a Holiday Inn for tonight through the IHG website which should earn me 1,000 point bonus, plus 250 points for booking through the web, plus 900 points for the stay. If I do something similar on the way back next week, that should get me approx. 4,300 points total - if I am thinking correctly. Anything else I should know about IHG points, etc.?

Get the IHG card :) or a credit card that earns you even more.

I plan to, just haven't worked up to that level yet ;) We've gone years without using credit cards, so I am easing back into the game.

Yeah I'm thinking there are a lot of promos out there... I think I saw one of the BoardingArea blogs post about them all in a single page the other day.

Welcome to Milepoint. If you do a bit of research, you may be able to find a code that allows you to watch a short video and get some free priority club points. I don't remember if it was 500 or 1000, but it was well worth the 30 seconds of watching.

Since your trip is coming up, Priceline might be a good option. Award stays are great, but staying at a Westin for $60 is not too shabby.
