Single for Valentine’s Day? Head to Rio!

Discussion in 'Brazil' started by NileGuide, Feb 5, 2011.

  1. Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is not a whole lot of fun for singles. The sight of all those mooning couples can be hard to stomach, and woe betide anyone who wants to try getting a decent restaurant table on February 14.
In Rio de Janeiro, however, you’ll have no such problems. Whether you want to find a new Valentine or just escape the whole mushy event altogether, the city beckons with its sun, fun, and summer party spirit.
Happily for anybody wanting to get away from loved-up couples, February 14 has no romantic significance in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian equivalent of Valentine’s Day, Dia dos Namorados (‘Lovers’ Day’) falls in June 12, so you can eat out without facing mile-long queues and/or being surrounded by loved up couples.
On the other hand, if the thought of Valentine’s Day has got you feeling a little romantic, you’re in the right place. Not without good reason is Rio de Janeiro known for its bronzed, buffed beach beauties, and whether you’re looking for a girl from Ipanema or a boy from Brazil, you’ll have plenty of eye candy.
If you want to actually make a date with your beautiful Brazilian, you can’t be backwards about coming forwards. The locals are incredibly flirtatious and tactile, and subtle attempts at eye contact are unlikely to make an impact.
While many of us confine our flirting to bars and nightclubs, summer in Rio means that an awful lot of socialising, and flirting, happens on the beach.
Head to Ipanema or Copacabana and, if someone catches your eye, don’t be too shy to try and get their number. (If you don’t speak Portuguese it will obviously help if they speak English. Ask ‘Fala Ingles?’ before launching into your chat up routine…
This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday, so nightlife options are a little limited. However, the always-busy hangouts of Shenanigan’s Irish Bar and Emporio, both in Ipanema, are good late-night hangouts and popular gathering points for both foreigners and locals. Try to be friendly without being a pain, and you should be making new friends in no time.[IMG]

NileGuide is a hoot! I suspect nobody from NileGuide has actually visited the places they discuss.
