Singaporeans paid an average of Sin$244 for a hotel room night in their own country in 2010, representing a 29% increase over 2009, according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index.

With the highest increase for hotel prices paid worldwide, Singapore ranks the fourth most expensive country globally for hotel rooms in 2010. The top three countries are Switzerland (Sin$258), France (Sin$256) and the United Kingdom (Sin$253).

When comparing cities within Asia however, it is a little surprising to not see Hong Kong towards the very top, instead Singapore was the most expensive city in Asia for hotel rooms in 2010 according to Hotels.com. Sydney (Sin$220) and Tokyo (Sin$199) were the second and third most expensive cities respectively.

Part of this could be that the big new hotels, such as Sands, are generally very expensive. I suspect that the quality mix is changing in an upward direction even though I suspect that extremely modest hotels in Singapore would be perfectly fine and not very risky.

each time i visit SG, i want to stay at a hotel - didn't want to cramp in with the in-laws...sigh...and each time i failed to do so since every decent hotel is soooo expensive. i sometimes wonder, how SG is able to promote their tourism when their hotel rates are the highest!? but i have to admit, the few times i did stayed at a SG hotel, their services were the best when compared with hotels in other cities or countries.

I'm stopping in Singapore for the first time for three days in June/July and I have to say that finding a hotel room at what I considered a reasonable price was difficult. Out of all the stops I'm making on the trip (London, Fukuoka, Colombo, Singapore, Sydney) Singapore was the only location I ended using points to book instead of cash.

Hopefully the legendary food is good enough to make me not regret stopping for a few days:)

If you want to try a bunch of different cuisines all in one location and cheap, you can do it at the food courts. my absolute favorite is the one at the basement of SunTec City (don't go to the food republic food courts - all junk - well except the one at Isoxxx(something) on Orchard). have a great time!

Famous one near airport called - Long Beach
Chain store - famous for white pepper crab - called No Sign Board. Enjoy!

Folks, FYI, if you're flying through SIN on SQ, they offer a stopover package with several hotel nights at good prices in a couple different categories. There are also some discounts and freebies that you can get by showing your boarding pass. Check singaporeair.com for details of these promotions.

You are correct about hotels in Singapore. That is why I prefer the Philippines, India and Malaysia.

I also agree. Hotels in Singapore are too expensive. But in the Philippines, the hotels and resorts are very affordable with great hotel features. This is the main reason why many native and foreign travelers said that "They found heaven on Earth.". Philippines is really the perfect place for you to spend your holiday vacation.

I think hotel costs are a part of the consideration, both countries offer different experiences and attractions...
