Does this mean we can do SIN-SYD-MEL-SIN for lower fares?

Great news for me as most of my international travel is done on SQ :).
This will place an even greater strain on Qantas, I am glad that I don't have
any Qantas shares at the moment.

Does this finally mean us Aussies will have a way to keep our United (Star Alliance) miles and status alive, by flying Virgin Australia domestically? I am hoping the answer is YES!!!! :) :) :)

I really hope Virgin Australia joins Star Alliance. Having a domestic partner would really increase the (almost non-existent) competition.

Not yet. Currently it is only partnering with SQ, and not UA (they are partnering with DL).

Well it could be sometime yet. They have also partnered with DL which could take some time to unwind if VA decides to join *A. John Borghetti indicated that they are not looking at alliances until at least 2012.

In fact, I think VA will operate a model like Alaskan Airlines where they just code share with everyone, rather than joining an alliance. Of course, ST is also an option ;)
