SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, said on Wednesday it will begin flights to Koh Samui, Thailand from September 27.

Koh Samui will be SilkAir's third destination in Thailand, after Phuket and Chiang Mai.

The new services will be operated with the Airbus 319 aircraft, and scheduled three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Bangkok Airways will be the codeshare partner on these flights, according to a joint statement by SilkAir and Bangkok Airways.

SilkAir will also codeshare on Bangkok Airways' daily evening services between Singapore and Koh Samui, providing customers with more flight options

I wish they would offer regular SQ service.

Remember that silkair flights generally don't earn FF miles or honor benefits. IIRC, even though they're part of SQ in a sense, they're not in *A.

Well, some of us have KF as one of our FFP of choice. Thus, a MI flight is a slight help in adding the balance in our KF miles. :)

I dont think Samui Airport can handle a SQ B777/A330 aircraft, so Silkair is the natural choice with its fleet of A319/A320.

I know. That's why I said that they generally don't earn miles or receive benefits in *A.

MI is a little precious gem which SQ is keeping (and not sharing). Being the only FFP which accepts MI miles keeps passengers in SQ Krisflyer program.

If MI is in Star Alliance, passengers (like me) will not want to credit these flight points to KF and thus dilute the value of the KF program vis a vis other airlines's FFP.

And keeping MI out of *A means I choose not to fly them.

If you can get to the places that other *A carriers fly to, then that will not a problem :)

In addtion to Koh Samui, Silkair should be announcing the launch of Bandung soon. There will be another third new city Silkair will fly to by end this year.

Bandung Airport has fog problem often right? But, yes, it was a neat view up from the air when landing or taking off.

I wonder if Silkair can compete with the LCCs that had already established their foothold in BDO? BDO is very reachable from CGK now that the new expressway has been opened, so maybe those that do not want to fly LCCs will still prefer to fly from CGK as it has more flights, etc.
