Dont understand why they don't keep these special livery on planes indefinitely ... I read a blog post that said they were going to take them down in December, but also it lists all the manpower and work went into making and it seems like a waste.

Ditto +1, after all the investment/manpower used to create such "masterpieces" indeed, they should keep it for longer, maybe even over a lifetime of the plane with the airline. Having said this, I'm always fascinated when airlines come up in new ways to celebrate their heritage, their present and their futures with us, with the world, with their passengers, it's inspirational. Love the livery, feels like meaningful art to the world and represents their country. Cheers. :)
