I haven't seen a thread dedicated to discussion the reduced mileage distances now being shown on United.com. This seems like a PR disaster in the making, and possibly also the ingredients for a successful class action lawsuit against United, since almost all the distances have consistently shrunk, and in many cases are less than competitors are showing.

Let's post examples and competitive data where we can find it.

For the past 10+ years CO has credited 2401 miles for SEA-EWR
AS also credits 2401 miles for SEA-EWR (or maybe 2402)
Neither the SEA nor the EWR airports have moved in the past 40 years
www.gcmap.com lists the distance as 2402 miles

Now united.com lists the distance as 2392 miles. That seems beyond the margin for error or the possible difference between different locations on the airfield. AS is the only competitor on the route.

    I'll post another route.

    SEA-IAH
    CO formerly credited 1874 miles
    AS credits 1874 miles
www.gcmap.com lists it as 1874 miles
Neither SEA nor IAH airports have moved

The new United.com shows 1869 miles

I did check the front page and didn't see any title that corresponded. Oops.

Shannon Kelly's justification as well as the rationalization you posted don't explain why all distances shrunk, even for airports that didn't move, and whose size is small enough that you can't use "where on the airport you measure" as the reason. If UA had been awarding more miles than competitors it wouldn't have been a big deal to align. Anyway, I'll go post over there.
