So, I had a great time at the New Jersey FTU program this weekend. Got to learn a lot not only from the luminaries in the field but also from the extremely knowledgeable people I ate and traveled with.

At dinner tonight with my family (my wife and I have two daughters, N— who is 12 and E— who is 10), the conversation went something like this:

N—: What information did you learn at your meeting?

Larry: Well, I got some good information about a credit card from Alaska Airlines which lets you get two tickets for the price of one, and both tickets get to earn miles.

N—: Miles? Which alliance is Alaska in?

Larry: Alliance? How do you know about alliances?

E—: Which alliance is Swiss in? I like their screens!

So, is now the time to start worrying? Or is it too late?

That's like my kids when I say we are going on vacation and they ask where are their carryon luggage and passports. Second question is are we going to hong kong or straight to Singapore. Ages 6 and 4.

LOL, the worry is when they start asking you why they haven't gotten their upgrades cleared yet.

No worries...answer their questions and before you know it, they will be booking your awards for you.

It's when they start getting credit cards that you should start to worry. :p

Only start worrying when they clear the upgrade list before you do. Definately start worrying when they ask you when they should churn their cards.

Naaaaah no worries. With rising fuel prices and a weak economy the future looks kinda bleak sometimes for air travel.

We're not normally premium cabin fliers; I don't think the kids have ever been forward of standard economy. But boy, did N—'s eyes light up when I told her the Alaska companion pass can be applied to reasonably priced first class fares from NYC to Hawaii.

I checked right after the talk yesterday and I saw that the First Class ticket is double a coach ticket (+/- <$100) from NYC - Maui in August. Amazing...why fly in coach, when you can get F for the same price with EQMs and miles.

Those fares are also available in the winter, including school holidays.

The value of those companion passes and the Alaska program in general was probably my biggest single takeaway from the weekend. Thank you Gary Leff!

Without a doubt. I had read it before, but when someone presents it that way, then you realize...wow. It can be and should be used and taken advantage of in a good way. :)

Maybe also keep some Hawaiian air miles for intra island flights instead of coverting to Hilton points.

The proper Yiddish word is nachas! Roughly translated, it means enormous pride and gratitude. After hearing Belkin speak on Saturday, he'd have those kids signed up for credit cards in a heartbeat!
