UA announced 5 new SVP/VP roles this afternoon in an internal message (link to my story about the news):
    • Brad Rich hired as SVP United Express (formerly President/CFO SkyWest)
    • Lynda Coffman VP - Ground Services overseeing a new subsidiary for that purpose
    • Sandra Pineau-Boddison as SVP Customers, a new position in the company
    • Donna Towle as Vice President – Operations Engagement and Leadership, also a new position
    • Mike Ellis promoted to Senior Vice President – Human Resources

The Lynda Coffman role involves creating and managing a new ground services unit which I imagine to be akin to Delta Ground Services or Eagle Ground Handling for taking on both UA and OAL contracts using lower cost employees.

SVP Customers oversees Customer Experience, Call Center and Food Services.

Donna Towle was VP-HR. I have had very nice dealings with her.

A few of UA rampers (on Facebook) want to know why the other news sources have not picked up this information. Needless to say the ramp workers are very much interested in the newly formed Ground Services division.

I noticed quite a lot of activity on my site from Facebook. Now I know where it is coming from. :)

It was a late Friday "dump" of news and only an internal memo, not a formal announcement by the company. I happen to have a source which gave me a copy. I expect that when the official release comes there will be plenty of coverage, but for right now I seem to be the only one with the news. Given that today is the best day ever on my blog in terms of page views (and the DL1086 transcript wasn't a bad day at all) I'm not complaining too much.

I know of atleast 2 people that shared your blog with 2 separate UA Facebook groups.

The Customers role is a new position but many of the responsibilities there were previously handled by Jeff Foland who left in January to work for Hertz. In the interim UA's General Counsel has been covering those aspects of the company.

Two minor items to point out:

    1. Lynda Coffman comes from legacy UA. This is material because as you may recall, legacy UA engaged in significant outsourcing at its hubs to handle the UAX flights. She's well aware of what worked and what went horribly under that arrangement, and will bring that expertise in crafting a ground services unit that will likely grow to take over nearly all ground staff functions not otherwise protected by contract (and don't just think regional flights, or domestic stations...imagine the potential upside of having virtually all stations worldwide handled by either UA directly or the new UA ground services unit).

    2. Sandra Pineau-Boddison is legacy CO. While legacy UA might have done a better job in catering to high value flyers, legacy CO did a better job in customer service generally. With Delta and American going in the direction of providing a respectably decent baseline for everyone, new UA needs to develop a dignified customer experience for its entire customer base without delay.

To add to all of this, I was told that Scott O'Leary is now in charge/focusing on IRROPS.

I don't blame them at all, they now have to protect their jobs from outsourcing.

I believe that has been his focus for a while now.
Things have not really changed on that front with this move. The Union negotiates which stations are protected from outsourcing. That list didn't change because UA is building its own subsidiary. If anything, I'd bet that outsourcing to a subsidiary of UA is better for both employees and customers than outsourcing to a random 3rd party. Though probably not quite as good as keeping things in-house.

Isn't that normally the time to announce bad news?

In theory, yes. But this is one which wasn't actually published so much as leaked so I'm not sure what the play is there.

Most of the ramp had unrealistic expectations that joining the union would be a blanket protection. Alot of those above the wing also felt the same however they have now seen that being union isn't always better. Of course many of the unionist claim it's their weak union leaders but who knows.

That's been his focus since the CO/UA merger.
