I've got a bunch of Global Premier Upgrades expiring in a few months. I heard from someone on a flight once that she's bought those upgrades in the past. I think that would be me sponsoring the other person for an upgrade. Does anyone know the best way to go about selling one or two of these?

Sponsoring an upgrade with nothing in return is fine but selling upgrade certificates, miles and anything else an airline considers "mileage currency" (for lack of better expression) is against the terms and conditions of the mileage program and if one is caught selling, they run the risk of not only being "expelled" from the program with a complete loss of miles and upgrade certs but the person you "sold" the upgrade to also runs the risk of having the upgrade cancelled (and their mileage account could be at risk as well)

You've heard from the angel on one shoulder. The devil on the other shoulder (me and a few others I'm sure) would be interested in making a random gift to your PayPal account in exchange for a good friend providing an upgrade.

I think you mean, "as a source of funding for your future trip reports."

if you don't have any luck with your sales, I'm certain there are many deserving military members who would greatly appreciate your generosity.

There may be many deserving folks of a variety of persuasions or professions. But using them on the day of travel is rather more challenging.

I like the idea of donating to someone in the military. I will probably have 4 that I wouldnt be able to use this year so that something to keep in mind in the next few months.

I've tried to do this in the past, but check in sup said I couldn't just authorize it for them to decide and the opportunity to do it on day of flight with someone on my flight never works :(

Rather than the day of the flight, I am more than happy to sponsor Boxers if I have GPUs or RPUs that I know are going to expire in the next several weeks and go unused. I would rather let someone else use them than let them die an unnatural death :p.

    But that is just me.

GPUs (and RPUs) are property of the airline, and thus not yours to sell.

Said with tongue firmly in cheek, I suspect. We all know there's a thriving network of sales going on. SUWs/GPUs generally go for $200-$250 each, CR1s/RPUs about half that. Let's not be so naive.

I'm not naive about the impermissible "sales"...and I'm not naive about how many parties to such transactions find themselves screwed by unscrupulous buyers/sellers, nor am I naive about the active efforts of United to identify and punish offenders, either.

What is United's informal attitude about a former 1k'er with a bunch of expiring GPU's and RPU's sponsoring a current active 1K'er with them before they expire and the active 1K'er sponsoring the former a couple for a trip the former is taking after his upgrades will of already expired? Hypothetically, no money is exchanged.

Does UA aggressively search for these or mostly just looking for "EBay" type sales?

I know that formally that "Trading" is against the rules.

The folks at the USO deal with military members transiting airports. I would imagine that if you contacted a USO at a United hub airport, they could work with you on the detailed arrangements as military flyers come through.

Be very careful about mentioning "selling" of any kind. UA can (and will sometimes) deduct miles for doing this or cancel your account altogether.

I'm interested if you are serious. I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks that I could definitely use them with.
