I see alot of scuba diving related avatars around MP. I searched and didn't see any threads that teed up the idea of doing some sort of scuba diving DO/gathering in 2011. I figured by creating a thread, the divers within MP might find it, post their interest (or lack of interest), and start to shape up what could be a cool trip full of flying, diving, drinking, and meeting new people (not listed in any particular order of course ;)). I'd love to hear suggestions for timing (spring, summer, fall), region (caribbean, asia, other), and duration. I for one am having diving withdrawal from this (what has seemed like a very long) winter and would like to get a dive trip (or few) booked soon.

Just realized I posted this in the Miles/Points area instead of the Travel area. Oops. I'll ask the Mods to move it.

I have to say the lack of recent diving has me eager for just about any type - almost to the point of cutting a hole in the ice . . . haven't done that in quite a few years - but that's another story.

Certainly a very tempting concept. While I would love to do the SCUBA DO, most likely I could not due to family obligations. However, if things lined up just right [IMG]

A DO is a term from FT for a get-together of FTers. We can also do DOs. They may have an activity such as touring the Boeing plant, or just getting together for drinks and / or dinner.

I am always up to go diving, and have started to suffer from with withdrawal.

My name is Secretsea18, and I am a diver.
I have been dry for 6 days now.
I don't have a dry sponsor, so am looking to get wet again soon.

I am very partial to diving in Asia, not so much in Caribbean area.

I would not only be up to it, but also (if desired) to host it--granted Narragansett Bay is very good for cold water diving...

I suppose 68 degree water isn't going to cut it?

I was planning to get my certification this year as I want to go back to the Gili islands to dive (vs. just snorkel). I'd be a beginner, but I might be inclined to show up.

weren't there scuba diving tours at one of the OZ fests down in Australia?

I went snorkeling in Cairns, Queensland during the DO down under, but I know other people went for the more intense package.

I am long overdue for a diving vacation. Not a super-experienced diver, solo traveller and it's been a while, but I'm up for it if we can find a destination that's rookie-out of practice friendly (guess that lets Palau out!)

Something that lined up with a good fare break/MR opportunity would be a plus, but not necessary.

Think I have to have it warm, please. I'm not a dry-suit diver!

That's a place on my wish list. Don't suppose you could post a trip report? Or at least favorite photos?

I would be up for it! I love diving, been diving for a few years and I'm an instructor.
But this year is a bit busy. Only time I could would be July. Rest is just work, sadly.

I was just in the Gili islands earlier this month. I am not sure the diving would be much better than the snorkeling. IMHO, there is some great duving to be had in Gorontal, Sulawesi island, Indonesia. The Togean islands are really beautiful

I am a great fan of California diving, but I know I'm in the minority. The water is (relatively) cold, the wildlife less chromatic than the tropics (but often far bigger), and our best diving is usually winter. But, it can be easier to get to California than many tropical locales, so it maybe should be on the list of potential locations.

I will see if I can dig some up. I don't take a lot of travel pics but I know I've got a couple.

Really beautiful place... not the kind of place that I can see a lot of frequent flyer junkies getting jazzed about though. It's positively primitive backpacker-ville. No hotels with points but if you reserve ahead, you can get some great basic villas. Gili T, where we stayed, is a bit like Kuta minus cars and corporate commercialism.

My kind of travel (solo by circumstances, primitive/backpacker by choice). Indonesia has long been on my wishlist, particularly Sulawesi. I snorkel and dive - snorkeling is great (and you can still do it between dives!), but oh...the ability of being able to stay down below, peek in crevices or skirt the bottom, even if you are only talking 25-35 feet down - wow - wow -wow! It is really worth it to be able to dive.

Now Gorontalo is really work to get to. There is wonderful diving in many places in Indonesia, including Bali (much easier to get to).

I favor place like Lembeh Strait, Komodo, Ambon and Raja Ampat in Indonesia, but have dived in other Indonesia places too. Southeast Asia has so many places that can be suitable for different interests and levels of diving. Many of the countries are generally easy to get to, but getting to the dive areas may be much more challenging, for example, Wakatobi. It used to be the standard 2 days to get to Bali from US. After an overnight in Bali, then 2 1/2 more days of flights, buses, flights, bus and boat to get to Wakatobi.

I am happy to give more information about dive locations I have been to by request! [IMG]

I often travel and go diving as a single individual, and can survive some of the more meager dive locations providing that they are truly excellent places to dive.
Maybe we can join forces and go on a trip together. [IMG]
