HEL-lo Helsinki! Hilarious puns on the city's airport code (HEL) aside, our man about the world John "Yes, That John" Walton has been spending some down time in Helsinki this year, and has some great recommendations all this week for things to do in the world's most northerly capital!

Cards on the table: we're enormous fans of the Nordic countries, and Helsinki is one of our favourite cities. Not only does it have an awesome airline (Finnair) and airport (we < HEL!), it's really easy to get into town and have an explore.

If you're going to or transiting through HEL at some point, try booking a day's layover, leaving your luggage at the airport and hopping on the Finnair bus that delivers you straight to the impressive Helsinki Central railway station...and then consider some of our favorite Finnish things to do.
Go for a wander down Esplanadi to Kauppatori market: if you want Helsinki chic, this cafe-lined park street is the place to see and be seen. Tightly packed tables and chairs serve expensive (but wonderfully strong) coffee, cakes and sandwiches. The tourist information center is halfway down. Very picturesque (if chilly) excursions leave from the quay that's home to the Kauppatori market, with handicrafts, food stalls and local produce. (No, you can't carry that fish on board the plane when you leave. Regards, your fellow passengers.)

Head out to the Olympic Stadium: pop quiz time! When were the Helsinki Olympics? If you answered 1952, you're right, and that level of knowledge means you should totally visit. It's just a couple of km outside the city center and it's super-easy to get to. Make sure you go up the signature Olympic tower.

And be sure to check out our Helsinki photo thread for ideas before you go; then add your own photos when you return.
