JAL will standardize fuel surcharge calculation for travel via Japan from October 1. You can save up to 50% from this! Unfortunately not everyone will benefit from this change but no one will get screwed at least! No saving for those who travel to Japan, those who travel from North/Central/South America and Hawaii, and those who travel from and bought their ticket in Australia.

More details on this change on JAL website. I have put a detail explanation with examples on my blog too: http://jal-pak.blogspot.com/2011/09/jal-to-standardize-way-fuel-surcharge.html

Sweet! I was waiting to make bookings 'til Oct. anyway. Now I've got TWO reasons to wait. :)

no benefit for you who fly from Japan. It's benefits those who fly via Japan from Asia, Oceania (except Australia), and Europe

I thought if you were flying ex Aus for example to Europe or US via Japan that you would get smacked up with two fuel surcharges for each leg rather than just one. Good to know this is incorrect.

Even if you ticket in Australia before oct 1, you only pay for 1 YQ per leg. You can simply do a dummy booking on the JAL AU website to get the exact number.
