The San Diego Padres aren’t typically the headliners when it comes to Major League Baseball. Here in San Diego, we are all about supporting the friars and their fans, but everywhere else we’re a lost cause. While our stats box hasn’t changed, the classic jersey has – and it’s that change that is getting national attention.
As it is tradition, the San Diego Padres have payed tribute to the Marines and Navy in the past by donning a camouflage jersey. This year, in keeping with the decade old tradition, the tribute to the Marine MARPAT is almost a little too good, say fans and sports critics. Digitally designed, the camouflage is so detailed that it might be difficult for fans in both Petco Park and television to notice the difference.
The Marines whose pattern this is based from couldn’t be more pleased with the result. The San Diego Union-Tribune quotes Jack Ensch, the Padres’ retiring director of military affairs, as saying “Up close, they look great. But they are going to blend in more on television and from the stands. Many fans aren’t going to be able to tell that these are camouflage uniforms paying tribute to the military.”
