So... something went wrong last night and the "Big Bay Boom" was actually quite the boom, and yet a bust.

In one of the nicest fails of all time, ALL the fireworks that were scheduled to be launched during the 18 minute show were fired up at once, and everything turned into a giant fireball over the course of 15 seconds.

No idea if they have the time/resources to schedule another show this year (the countdown clock has already reset to 364 days) but they have a statement on their site apologizing for the glitch.

Yep, last night's photo DEFINITELY does not look like the advertising photo on the site! ;)

if we feel that it is quality not quantity, that was the best 15 second fireworks show ever.

You can actually see the other fireballs in the distance go off at the same exact time too.

I don't know what the complaint is. I was watching the fireworks in a "small" town in the Bay Area, and my comment at the end was that they should have condensed it a bit since the grand finale at the end was the really nice part. The San Diego fireball fireworks seems to have been a pretty amazing few seconds. :)

Kind of sums up San Diego's economic state at the moment. Even if they had the money to put on another fireworks show surely the money would be better spent fixing the potholes and providing other services.

Bad thing - you waited all day for the fireworks!

Good thing - you don't have to wonder when they will end because you have to pee! :p

Think of it as the A.D.D. fireworks show.

Men say: I don't see the problem. It was GREAT for 28 seconds

    Women say: Yes, you wouldn't.

Did they contract this to the boys from The Big Bang Theory when they visited Comicon last year?.

According to our local news here in the Bay Area the company that was contracted for the fireworks promised a new show free of charge and blamed the problem on a computer virus. Right. The famous "launch_fireworks_early" virus -- did they forget to install McNorton?

A free show? Wow, the show cost $350 000! Sounds like they should just reimburse rather than have a do-over!

I would have liked to have been around for that planning meeting.

Terrorist A: so Osama, I'm please to report that our plan to totally demoralize the infidel dogs is proceding with great speed.

Terrorist B: That is GREAT news Achmed, so we're gong to strike coordinated attacks against strategic locations?

Terrorist A: Well, not exactly. One location, and we're not exactly going to stop it from happening, just speed it up REAL fast. It's a great target though, the Big Bay Boom! In San Diego!

Terrorist B: So, not the military base?

Terrorist A: Well, no, there's a problem with access you se.....

Terrorist B: And, not a major transit center or airport.

Terrorist A: Again, no...you see, the Americans are looking fo....

Terrorist B: So, a fireworks show, and you're going to speed it up not stop it?

Terrorist A: Yes, well you see the kids and.....ok, it doesn't sound that impressive when you put it that way.

    It'll happen again.

The fireworks show itself is $125,000. About $275,000 is through other things, like getting off-duty cops, clean-up, etc.

A big chunk, if not all of that $275k comes from sponsorships (hotels, restaurants). They'll pony up again for the chance to get more business.

    I'm betting on Labor Day.
